A Future Where Mothers Thrive: Strengthening Maternal Health in Northern Uganda
While Te-Kworo Foundation’s story began with education, it quickly became clear that girls’ futures are inseparable from the wellbeing of their mothers and communities. In northern Uganda, many expectant mothers walk miles—often while in labour—to reach skilled care. Some arrive exhausted and afraid because our clinic is the only place where they can find safety and compassion.
This urgent need led to the creation of our Maternal and Child Health Clinic, which has since become a lifeline for thousands of women and babies. The clinic provides antenatal care, safe deliveries, postnatal support, and home visits led by our dedicated midwives. When emergencies arise, our ambulances transport mothers to hospitals hours away—giving them a chance to survive.
Grassroots Impact and Sustainable Change
Our mobile health program reaches remote villages where families often have no transport options at all. Through these visits, thousands receive vaccinations, medical reviews, and essential health education.
This work is creating a powerful cycle of change. Several former Te-Kworo students—who once came through our schools—have now trained as midwives through programs supported by the foundation. They return home, skilled and confident, to serve their communities.
The Kworo–Sonic Healthcare Foundation Hospital
Despite progress, maternal mortality in northern Uganda remains among the highest in the world. To address this, we are building a world-class maternity hospital in partnership with the Barbara May Foundation and the Sonic Healthcare Foundation.
Set to open soon, this 42-bed hospital will provide free maternal care to more than 800,000 people across four underserved districts.
The facility includes:
Two operating theatres
A neonatal care unit
Pathology services
Specialised wards
Skilled medical teams
Free, life-saving services for mothers and babies
This project unites global expertise with deep local knowledge:
Te-Kworo Foundation – 20+ years of grassroots work supporting women and girls
Sonic Healthcare Foundation – world-leading medical expertise, pathology equipment, funding, and training
Barbara May Foundation – globally recognised maternal healthcare specialists
Together, we are shaping a future where no woman dies giving life, and no child is lost due to lack of care.
A Story of Hope: Baby Fortunate
One story that captures the heart of this mission is that of baby Fortunate and her young mother—a student in our education program.
When Fortunate was born with a cleft palate, feeding was nearly impossible. Her mother tried tirelessly, but her daughter grew weaker each day. Heartbroken and uncertain, she turned to our maternal health team.
Through the generosity of partners and supporters, we were able to provide emergency nutrition, ongoing care, and eventually access to cleft surgery. Today, Fortunate is thriving—smiling, growing, and full of life. Her mother is back in school, working toward a brighter future for them both.
